The 2024 Brasileirão season has just begun, but the first round has already shown what the Brazilian championship tends to offer year after year. In addition to the goals, the skills, and the crowds, the Serie A’s initial fixture had episodes that can only happen in Brazil.

Many of these situations were not related to specific actions on the field but rather to events surrounding it. In Belo Horizonte, for example, a fan got confused while leaving Mineirão stadium with his car and ended up stuck on the stadium stairs.

“I don’t usually come to the stadium. I saw an exit sign and thought it was the way out. Then I crashed my car into the stairs,” said the fan in question.

Miles away in the state of Goiás, another peculiar moment unfolded. Just 13 minutes into the match between Atlético Goianiense and Flamengo, referee André Luiz Skettino decided to send off the home team coach Jair Ventura. Even Tite, the opposing coach, looked unhappy with the referee’s decision and complained.

That same match ended with even more controversy, as Flamengo were awarded a questionable penalty in injury time to clinch a 2-1 victory. Bruno Henrique, for whom the alleged foul was called, later posted on social media a picture with a cut lip, aiming to justify the penalty for his team.

There were also complaints about the refereeing from Atlético Mineiro, who protested a red card not given to Fagner (Corinthians) for a tackle on Matías Zaracho: the Galo even posted a photo of Zaracho’s leg after the match.
