Prestigious in South America but admired in many other parts of the world, the Brasileirão stands out from any other league for one particular reason: that even the biggest teams are at risk of dropping to the second division.

Unlike most competitions which have up to three relegation spots, the Brazilian league sees four sides fall to the lower tier every year. This means that a bad season could prove costly even for the most storied clubs in the country.

Since Brazil adopted this round-robin system in 2003, a number of giants suffered relegation (some of them more than once): Grêmio, Atlético Mineiro, Corinthians, Vasco da Gama, Palmeiras, Internacional, Cruzeiro, and most recently Santos.
