Fluminense dream of Thiago Silva’s return midway through the year, when the defender’s contract with Chelsea expires. Though the Tricolor’s interest has existed for months now, the club’s president, Mário Bittencourt, once again made it clear he wants to get this done.

“I’m very good friends with Thiago (Silva), we talk about various topics and not just about his possible return to Fluminense. At the moment, there’s nothing concrete, but we have a strong desire for him to come back home. From what we’ve heard, his contract with Chelsea ends halfway through the year and he wouldn’t renew it. I believe that in Brazil his desire is to play for Fluminense. As soon as he is free from Chelsea, we will try again. And he will help us in this very important year,” Bittencourt told Globo Esporte.

Will Silva follow in Marcelo’s footsteps?

The future of the Brazilian has been up in the air for months, as his contract at Stamford Bridge ends at the end of the season and there are still no signs of what he wants to do in the future. At 39, in Rio de Janeiro there’s optimism Silva will want to return home.

Marcelo set the example last year, with such a great impact on his return that he helped the club win both the Campeonato Carioca and the first Copa Libertadores in its history.

We’ll have to wait and see if the center-back follows in the footsteps of the full-back, who had a dream return. Changes are expected in London from July onwards, as the Blues are experiencing another disappointing season for their aspirations. Time will tell if those changes include Silva or not.
