With a goal from Luiz Henrique early in the second half, Botafogo defeated Flamengo this Sunday (28th), in the Clássico da Rivalidade (Rivalry Classic) for the 4th round of the Brazilian Championship. The Glorious team temporarily takes the lead in the league, with 9 points.

After a rehearsed play on a corner kick, the number 7 jersey of the Alvinegro Carioca (Black and White from Rio) shot into the corner of Rossi’s goal and scored the first goal of the match. The celebration was in grand style.

Luiz Henrique celebrates in great style after opening the scoring in Flamengo vs Botafogo

Wakanda forever! After opening the scoring at the Maracanã and paving the way for Fogão’s (Botafogo’s nickname) away victory, Luiz Henrique took a Black Panther mask, the Marvel superhero played by actor Chadwick Boseman in the movies.

Understanding the celebration

The celebration in reference to Black Panther has already been reproduced by several players around the world. In the film, T’Challa is the prince of Wakanda, a fictional kingdom, and is the main character of the work that has the majority of the cast formed by black actors. The work was a success for spreading African culture.

Crossing their arms in an X, the players replicate the movement of the inhabitants of Wakanda. The celebration also carries a great meaning, symbolizing the fight against the crimes of racism experienced by black athletes.

In the post-match interview, Luiz Henrique spoke about the goal and his celebration. Last Wednesday (24th), in the Libertadores, the number 7 jersey scored his first goal with the Glorious shirt.

“We had rehearsed this play in training. In training it didn’t work out, but in the game it did. Yesterday I was talking to my friends that I was going to score a goal today, I had never scored a goal against Flamengo and I did,” said Luiz Henrique.

“In the Libertadores I couldn’t get the mask because of the yellow card, but I said that today I was going to get the mask and celebrate. Our evolution has been good, we have gotten used to the coach’s formation, it’s been working. The ball is not reaching John because of our defense, just keep going like this,” concluded the forward.

Remembering Zagallo

Sambafoot Series launched a new documentary about the football legend Zagallo. Known as ‘Velho Lobo‘ and as superstitious as it gets, Zagallo helped shape what Brazilian football is nowadays — as a player and as a coach.

The first, second and third episodes are available on Sambafoot’s Youtube channel. Stay tuned for the upcoming releases as we keep telling this legend’s life story.
