Thiago Silva, Fluminense’s 2007 Copa do Brasil champion and Chelsea’s current idol, spoke to The Guardian about how meeting Milan legends Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta transformed his career. “Meeting Maldini awakened something in me,” Silva said, revealing the impact of Maldini’s lifestyle and discipline on his own.

Arriving at Milan at 24, Silva saw in Maldini a model for longevity in football, inspired by his commitment to self-care. “The way I look after myself – I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t lose sleep – means I can reach Maldini’s age. There is only one Maldini. He changed my mindset,” Silva reflected.

Nesta’s influence was equally profound. Silva regarded him as a teacher, emphasizing the value of training alongside him. “Nesta was a teacher for me in training. I realized that playing with him I would learn a lot,” he admitted.

Now at Chelsea and nearing his 40th birthday, Silva contemplates his future. His contract ending mid-season opens the possibility of a return to Fluminense, a move he has hinted at repeatedly. Silva’s reflections capture not just career highlights but the deep impact of mentorship and personal discipline on his professional journey.
