James Rodríguez has fallen short of expectations at São Paulo so far, but Néstor Lorenzo believes the Brazilian team is to blame for that. In the Colombian coach’s eyes, the midfielder should get more playing time to make a difference with the Tricolor.

“James in his team is not criticized, he just doesn’t play enough. But he played 11 minutes and São Paulo created more chances than in the previous 80 minutes thanks to James. We know what James can give, it doesn’t surprise me. We hope he gets into rhythm with his team to come to the national team and perform for 90 minutes, he will do it. He feels the national team in a special way, we all know that,” said Lorenzo.

James, with different versions in Colombia and São Paulo

Although his arrival in July 2023 revolutionized the Morumbi, the former Real Madrid player did not perform as expected so far. In fact, he was on the verge of leaving the club this year. James eventually agreed to stay, but still boasts just four appearances in 14 fixtures.

This situation raised questions in his home country, where people felt James’ lack of playing time could affect his performances for the national team.

However, the Cúcuta native once again showed his talent in his nation’s 1-0 victory against Spain.

“James is a great player, different. He was looking for his best form, ideally he would have performed well for the team here in the second half. He did very well, we told many Spanish media outlets in these days. I feel that James has always shown that whenever he has the opportunity, he contributes a lot to the national team,” Lorenzo added.
