Colombian defender Juan Zuniga is under police protection following a barrage of abuse and threats in the wake of his tackle that ended the World Cup of home star Neymar in last week’s Quarter Final.

Zuniga, who plays his club football for Napoli in Italy, was guarded by up to ten officers as his side were given a civil reception for their excellent showings at the tournament.

The defender has gone on record to apologise to Neymar for kneeing the Barcelona striker in the back, insisting that no malice was used in a thechallenge that broke a bone in the back of Brazil’s most exciting player.

Zuniga is believed to have received a host of abuse on social media from irate Brazilian fans who blame him for robbing the competition of one of its best talents.
