Barcelona striker Neymar has taken to social media to praise the legendary Rivalso, who today announced his retirement from the sport. A stellar career, in which he won the World Cup in 2002, when Neymar was ten years old, was brought to an end on Sunday as Rivaldo decided that his boots were to be hung up permanently.

Alongside Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, Rivaldo proved to be an inspiration for a generation of young footballers from Brazil and much farter beyond, and the Selecao’s new Golden Boy, Neymar, has taken the time to acknowledge the fact.

Writing on his official Twitter feed, the 22 year-old posted: “Football thanks you for everything you did and Brazil for you to be Brazilian! Congratulations.”

With 20 years’ difference in age between the two, and both having donned the famous Brazilian strip, Neymar will be hoping that Rivaldo’s 2002 World Cup success can be replicated at this summer;s tournament in the pair’s homeland.
