Former Santos star Neymar will wear the No.11 shirt during his time at Barcelona.
The 21-year-old striker had been given the choice between the No.11 and No.7 shirts at Camp Nou, following Thiago Alcântara’s move to Bayern Munich and David Villa’s transfer to Atlético Madrid.
And Neymar has opted to take Thiago’s shirt number, which, until the recent Confederations Cup, he has previously worn for the Seleção.
A report in Sport says the club somewhat surprisingly decided to officially announce the news via a megaphone in their club store on Wednesday evening.
“The announcement was made informally via the audio on the club’s website,” O Globo reported.
Journalists who gathered at Neymar’s presentation on July 3 tried to get the striker to reveal which number he would carry on his back, as reported on Football Espana, although at the time it was not known which players might be leaving the Camp Nou in the summer market.
Neymar is still in his homeland after Brazil’s triumphant Confederations Cup campaign last month, and he is scheduled to begin training with his new Barcelona team-mates on July 25.
