Manchester City have confirmed that Maicon has opted to return to Serie A with a move to Roma.

The 31-year-old has left the club after starting just four games since arriving at the Etihad Stadium for £3 million from Inter last summer.

Maicon made his debut for City in a 1-1 draw away to Stoke City, but struggled with injury problems throughout the season and only made 11 appearances in all competitions.

New City boss Manuel Pellegrini told the former Cruzeiro star that he had no future at the club and left him out of the squad for their pre-season tour of South Africa, prompting Roma to move quickly to secure Maicon’s services.

“With Pablo Zabaleta and Micah Richards seemingly ahead of him in the battle for the right-back role with the Blues, the 31-year-old has opted to return to Serie A to continue his career,” a statement on Manchester City’s official website read.

The Brazil international joins Roma in a transitional period with Rudi Garcia taking charge at the Stadio Olimpico and hopes to rediscover the form that led him to become one of the world’s leading full-back’s during his time at Inter.

Sky Italia reported on Tuesday that Maicon will not cost the Giallorossi a penny as the Premier League club, in fact, paid in excess of €2 million for him to leave.
