Brazilian defender Marquinhos has become the centre of an extraordinary ‘wire tap’ row in Italy.

The 19-year-old’s club, Roma, have threatened legal action against a radio station that aired private conversations between their directors after it was alleged that phone calls were illegally intercepted, reports Football Italia.

A conversation between director of sport Walter Sabatini and general manager Claudio Fenucci was apparently recorded because one of the two men forgot to hang up the phone after giving an interview to the asromaradio.it staff.

It has emerged that during the conversations the defender’s name was mentioned regarding his proposed transfer to Barcelona, with the directors admitting the Brazilian could be immediately sold if the Spanish club offered €25 million plus agents commission.

The controversy as caused the radio station to release its own statement.

It read: “If a director leaves his phone on after a conversation and we hear him when he’s talking to someone else, it is certainly not our fault.”
