Grêmio may have to face Fluminense on Wednesday evening without Argentine striker Hérnan Barcos, who has spent the past few days in Buenos Aires consoling his sister after the death of her husband.

Barcos, 28, signed for the Porto Alegre club two weeks ago from Palmeiras but is already seen as a key player for Vanderlei Luxemburgo, given his experience and goalscoring record.

The striker flew into Rio de Janeiro late on Tuesday night but will be assessed by the Grêmio technical team first before a decision is made on whether he is in the right frame of mind to play.

“It’s a delicate situation. We are monitoring the player and, as always, he is willing to play. Vanderlei knows how to handle it all,” said the club’s executive director Rui Costa.

If Barcos is not fit to start then Luxemburgo will likely to turn to either Marcelo Moreno, who nearly left the club as part of the Barcos deal, or Welliton, who signed last week on loan from Spartak Moscow, to partner Eduardo Vargas in attack against the current Brazilian champions.
