Corinthians striker Emerson Sheik has been handed a six-game ban by the STJD following his dismissal against Atlético Mineiro in the 21st round of the Brasileirão.

Emerson was shown a second yellow card after a clash with Atlético defender Réver, but initially refused to leave the pitch and then gave a furious post-match interview in which he questioned the referees integrity and used inappropriate language.

The forward, who played a key role in the club’s maiden Copa Libertadores victory, has been found guilty of ‘behaviour contrary to the spirit of the game’ and ‘offending the honour of another individual’.

The ban means that Corinthians, already without the injured Paulo Guerrero, will be without Emerson for the derby fixture with Palmeiras. It is now likely that midfielders Romarinho, Jorge Henrique and Juan Manuel Martinez will form a makeshift attacking unit for the games to come.
