Fabinho struck the bar early on for Bahia, but it was about the extent of the joy all evening for Bahia, who were soon behind to a Felipe strike after good work from the ever-impressive Diego Souza.

The ex-Atlético Mineiro playmaker had spoken only yesterday of his need to step up and take responsibility in these final few league encounters and he did not disappoint.

In the second half, he was there once more at the crucial time for Vasco to seal the points that could be so important come December, capitalising on a Fernando Prass clearance to double the lead.

Vasco are in fine form and with the star in midfield in such fine form, they stand a real chance of seeing out the title race in top spot. Bahia on the other hand will be starting to worry about the ever approaching relegation battle beneath them.
