According to reports coming out of Brazil and sources close to the club, the Premier League side has been monitoring the 26-year old for a few months now. It was believed that they were going to make an offer in the summer but decided to chase PSG striker Mevlut Erdinc instead.

After failing to land the Turkish international, the attentions of the scouts and Alan Pardew’s backroom staff has turned back to Diego Souza who is in fine form this season. He scored a hat-trick against Cruzeiro at the weekend to keep Vasco at the top of the table.

Newcastle are in desperate need for a striker with Leon Best and Demba Ba currently in the starting positions. Despite the good start to the season, there are growing worries at the club over Ba’s fitness and whether Best can compete well for the whole season.

Reportedly, Alan Pardew believes Diego Souza is the missing link in the side and could try and sign him for £12 million in January or could even put a deal in place for him to move in the summer.

Souza is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League as he looks to continue improving in the hope he can compete in the 2014 World Cup for Brazil.

Evidence: Diego Souza’s hat-trick at the weekend against Cruzeiro.
