Tiago Nunes will be the next coach of Universidad Católica in Chile, having signed a contract until the end of this season. This announcement comes exactly one month after the Brazilian’s dismissal from Botafogo.

“Since we met with him, we were convinced that he could be a suitable coach for this team, considering his previous work and his personal and professional characteristics, in addition to the numerous references we received about his work,” stated Juan Tagle, president of Cruzados (the company that controls the club), in a statement.

“He is a professional with an outstanding career, a champion of the Copa Sudamericana and Copa do Brasil, as well as multiple regional tournaments in Brazil, and we are confident that he possesses the necessary elements and experience to place Católica where it should be,” he added.

Nunes, 44, achieved his greatest successes as a coach with Athletico Paranaense, with whom he won the Copa Sudamericana in 2018 and, a year later, the Suruga Bank Cup and the Copa do Brasil.

He has worked with Corinthians, Grêmio, and Ceará, until between November 2022 and for a year he had his only experience outside his homeland: he managed Sporting Cristal in Peru, with a memorable stint and mixed results.

On November 16, 2023, he was appointed to take charge of Botafogo. It was towards the end of the Brasileirão and he was supposed to reverse the poor results that had taken the team away from the top spot they held for 31 matchdays, but that did not happen, and the club finished in fifth place.

Universidad Católica had a poor start to the Chilean championship with one win, one draw, and two losses. The biggest blow came when they lost 2-0 to Coquimbo Unido, resulting in their elimination from the group stage of the 2024 Copa Sudamericana.
