Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli says that he and his teammates are encouraged by the summer arrival of Edu Gaspar as the Gunners’ Technical Director.

Martinelli arrived earlier in the summer from Ituano, while Edu left the Brazilian national team in July to take up a director’s post with the club he played for from 2000-2005.

Martinelli says he is motivated by Edu’s presence and his legacy at the club, where he won two league titles and three FA Cups.

“Edu is an exceptional guy, a great professional, victorious and who made history with the Arsenal shirt. We talked a lot when I arrived and, undoubtedly, having a person like him around motivates us more and more.

“I was received in the best way possible. Being very young, I got a little shy, because I only saw these players on television, on video games. But they welcomed me very well, making me feel at home and I try to learn from them on a daily basis.”

He says he knows he needs to take things slowly having only just arrived, “As it’s my first season, I want to show my potential to steady myself at the first team,” he said.

“I know the squad is packed with great players, but I know what I can do and my goal is to help the team. I think we can achieve great things this season by winning titles and marking our name in Arsenal’s history.”
