Having won the Ballon D’Or 6 times, Marta has pretty much conquered the world of women’s football- though the 33-year old will cite some unfinished business at this summer’s World Cup in France, probably her last chance to win the tournament, reports Dailystoke.com
But now the Orlando Pride forward is going to turn her hand to acting. The Brazilian forward posted a cryptic message on her Instagram account on Tuesday, saying, “I am informing you of an important decision, this year, I will dedicate myself to my family. After all, family always comes first. Thank you always for supporting me.”
The post led to speculation that Marta, known as ‘A Rainha’ (The Queen) in Brazil, would be hanging up her boots after this summer’s World Cup. The rumours were shrouded in suspense, given that Marta signed a new contract with her current club, Orlando Pride, in October 2018.
However, it was revealed today that she would play a leading role in a new show airing on Netflix Brasilcalled ‘The Umbrella Academy.’ In it, Marta plays a superhero who disposes of enemies using her skills with a football. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Marta clarified, “Calm down people! I said I would dedicate myself to my family, not that I would give up my superpowers of playing football.
“Hello little brothers and sisters from #TheUmbreallaAcademy, the number 10 is coming!” The show is based around a family of superheroes, each boasting a special power. At 33, Marta is coming to the end of her playing career, with 6 Ballon D’Ors to date. But it remains unclear whether acting is a serious pursuit for the forward once she hangs up her boots.
Marta has indicated that she will return to Sweden, where she has spent many years as a player, once her playing career is over. Marta is fluent in Swedish and in 2017, took Swedish citizenship. “I feel Swedish too and I’m super happy that’s done now,” she told the press at the time. “I wanted to be able to live in Sweden over the long term and now I can do that.”
The player will again carry the hopes of the Seleção Feminina this summer in France, particularly now striker Cristiane has retired from international duty. Brazil are an outside bet for the tournament and this may represent A Rainha’s last chance at the biggest prize in football.
