Santos playmaker Lucas Lima was called up by Tite to the national team squad for Brazil’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, against Bolivia and Venezuela.
After making it clear on several occasions that he wants to play in European football, Lucas Lima is negotiating a contract renewal with Santos until 2020. Santos president, Modesto Roma Júnior, and representatives of the player, Édson Khodor and Wagner Ribeiro, have met to discuss the matter. According to the information from Lance!, the parties have been discussing an exit clause of €15 million, to meet the player’s desire of acting in Europe. The clause would be similar to the one which was included in the contract of striker Gabigol. The 20-year-old striker had a release clause of €50 million, but Santos were contractually obliged to accept if a team offered €18 million to the club. The Italian side spent €29.5 million to buy Gabigol, who received €11.5 million because he himself owned 40% of the economic rights.
Previously, Modesto was against selling Lucas Lima, and only wanted to release him for free at the end of his contract, which expires in December 2017. The reason is that Santos owns just 10% of the economic rights of Lucas and did not see any financial advantage in selling one of the best players in the country. Since most of the economic rights belong to investment group Doyen, the Brazilian club wouldn’t be entitled to the full amount of the exit clause. Despite the desire to act in Europe, Lucas Lima received just one proposal in the last transfer window, from Crystal Palace. The interest of the Premier League side did not encourage Lucas, who decided to stay in Brazil.
