Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has leapt to the defence of Diego Costa after the Chelsea striker was omitted from the La Roja squad by coach Vicente del Bosque.

Costa has been the subject of a simmering row between Chelsea and the 2010 world champions after he was selected for international duty when short of match fitness last month.

However, Del Bosque left Costa at home for their games with Belarus and Germany but Casillas has said that his teammate is fully commited to the cause, despite only declaring for Spain last year.

He said: ‘The commitment he has [over his lack of] selection is fine. I am confident that his [commitment to Spain] is total."
