Former Brazil international Zico has admitted he feels sorry for Diego Costa.

The Brazilian born forward has struggled to make an impression up front for Spain in what has been a disastrous defence of their World Cup crown.

Zico, who was capped 88 times for Brazil, suspects Costa didn’t have enough time to adjust to the Spanish way of playing and believes David Villa would have featured more if he had been fit.

“I felt sorry for Diego Costa,” he wrote in his column for The Guardian. “He was never the player for the Spanish system and David Villa, if fitter, would have been much more useful. Let them be an example to Brazil. The Seleção are still among the favourites in this World Cup, but they are here to fight for a trophy, not collect it.”
