Brazil’s Marcelo believes he should have been awarded a late penalty in the 0-0 draw with Mexico yesterday, insisting he was pulled to the ground.
Referee Cüneyt Çakır was sure that the contact from Mexico’s Raúl Jiménez wasn’t enough to warrant the hosts being awarded a spot kick but the Real Madrid defender disagrees.
He felt it was a decisive moment because he was sure he would have crossed to one of his team mates and possibly created the opener.
Goal.com quoted Marcelo, he said: “When I controlled the ball, he grabbed my shoulder. And if he pulled me inside the box, it was a penalty.
“He pulled me. If he hadn’t done that, I would’ve taken the ball. I would’ve made it to the ball and crossed it to one of my team mates.”
Even though Marcelo is insistent that it should have been a penalty, there seems little doubt that the 26-year-old could have continued towards goal had he wanted to.
Instead Marcelo went down but unlike Fred against Croatia, he didn’t earn his nation a penalty kick and they were held to a disappointing 0-0. Brazil and Marcelo must bounce back against Cameroon next Monday.
