Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho has been named by ESPN Brasil as the best foreign-based Brazilian in the 2013/14 season.
The 21-year-old played a major part in the Reds successful campaign, which saw them come close to winning their first ever Premier League title.
Unfortunately the Anfield outfit fell short in their quest for the title but the young Brazilians performances didn’t go unnoticed and his form led to many arguing he deserved a call up to Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad.
That wasn’t forthcoming for Coutinho but after five league goals and seven assists, the former Internazionale playmaker can look back on this satisfactory season with delight after winning this award.
The Liverpool man wasn’t the only winner as ESPN Brasil named Hoffenheim’s Roberto Firmino as the best young player of the year.
Strangely Firmino is older than Coutinho but as the Liverpool playmaker won the best foreign-based player award he was eligible for the young player category.
22-year-old Firmino won the award due to his wonderful Bundesliga season – he scored 16 times and created 11 goals in 33 appearances.
Firmino was without doubt the revelation of the season and thus won the best young player award but despite these accolades neither will be representing Brazil in the World Cup.
