France head coach Didier Deschamps, who won the World Cup as a player in 1998, has admitted that the current crop representing Les Bleus need a generous stroke of luck if they are to repeat the feat at the tournament in Brazil this summer.
Deschamps, whose side squeaked into the draw via a play-off win over Ukraine, told reporters: “I’m going to Brazil with lots of ambition, but I’m a realist too.”
“There are countries that are much better than us on paper. We can’t hide from the truth. The only match that France won in the group stage of a World Cup in the last 12 years was against Togo in 2006.”
“I can’t talk about winning the World Cup. To win it for us would be viewed as a miracle.”
Descamps’ troops have a kind draw to start with, with Group E fixtures against Ecuador, Switzerland and Honduras.
