Corinthians head coach Mano Menezes has tempered the fact that his side are the early pacesetters in the Brasileirao championship but admitted that there are worse places to be after three games of the new campaign.

A narrow 1-0 away win at Chapecoense, courtesy of a goal from Paulo Guerrero, leaves the Sao Paulo club at the top of the table with seven points and without yet conceding a goal.

And Menezes told Lance: “It’s too early to celebrate in a competition like this, but without a doubt the lead is emblematic.”

“We know how much we need to improve but you improve by winning.”

Menezes is at the club for the second time, having been in charge between 2007 and 2010. In his first spell he took the club to the Serie B title and the Copa do Brasil in 2009.

Corinthians’ next game is a derby against Sao Paulo in the league this Sunday.
