Grêmio rescued a point in the dying seconds in Argentina on Wednesday night as Rhodolfo’s headed in to earn the Brazilian side a 1-1 draw with Newell’s Old Boys in the Copa Libertadores.
The host appeared to be heading to a 1-0 win, a victory which would have consigned Grêmio to their first defeat in this year’s competition but they bounced back to stay top of Group 6.
The two teams had played out a stalemate in the previous meeting last week and after a goalless first 45 it seemed like the goal would never come.
Fortunately it eventually did in the 79th minute as former Liverpool old boy Maxi Rodríguez smashed in a loose ball to finally open the scoring.
That strike seemed enough to give the Argentines all three points but Rhodolfo had other ideas and the 27-year-old rescued a draw in the first minute of time added on in the second half.
Grêmio‘s Argentine Hernán Barcos was the provider as he cut inside and his in-swinging cross was flicked in by Rhodolfo to preserve their unbeaten record in this year’s competition.
It means that Grêmio have their destiny in their own hands going into the final two Libertadores group stage matches.
