The Belo Horizonte club have confirmed that the two-time FIFA world player of the year has signed a one-year contract extension.

Negotiations had been underway since Atletico played in FIFA’s Club World Cup in December. Ronaldinho initially said that he wasn’t sure whether he would remain with the club in 2014 but after interest from Besiktas he decided to stay at the club where he won the Copa Libertadores title last year.

Club president Alexandre Kalil confirmed that he will be staying put.

“The fans can be annoying but Ronaldinho loves them, he has renewed his contract,” he posted on Twitter.

The former Barcelona playmaker has said he remains hopeful of playing in this year’s World Cup, although he hasn’t been called upon by Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari for several months.

Ronaldinho has been capped 97 times by Brazil and was a pivotal part of the team that won the World Cup in 2002.
