This Monday, Atlético-PR confirmed the appointment of another foreign coach. After previously appointing German Lothar Matthäus in 2006 and the Uruguayan Juan Ramón Carrasco in2012, the Paranaense club have appointed Manuel Ángel Portugal to replace outgoing Vágner Mancini.

The 58-year-old boasts exactly what club president Mario Celso Petraglia was looking in a new coach: a studious person willing to work in all areas of the club.

Miguel Portugal is the author of two books about the methodology of coaching football and has already worked as sporting manager of Spanish sides Real Madrid and Córdoba.

The manager met Mario Celso Petraglia in2008. The chief of the rubro-negro met the Spaniard whilst he was sporting director at Real Madrid. Miguel Portugal then visited Atlético’s training centre in August of the same year and was surprised at what he saw.
