Arsene Wenger has reportedly added Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo to his summer target list.

The Arsenal boss was apparently first alerted to the Brazilian in January and is now plotting a bid.

This news comes after the German side are reported to be willing to listen to offers for Gustavo after completing the signing of Thiago Alcântara.

Wenger’s priority remains a striker, but the Frenchman is keen to bolster his midfield and Gustavo fits the profile of player he is looking for, reports The Mirror.

However, he faces competition for the player from German club Wolfsburg, who have admitted their interest as well as Chelsea who are also rumoured to be looking at the player.

Gustavo’s main position is defensive midfield, but he can also cover as a defender, which is said to be attractive to Wenger as Thomas Vermaelen is set to miss the start of the season with a back injury.

Bayern are likely to demand around £15m for 25-year-old Gustavo, whose contract runs to 2015.

Gustavo is likely to be open to a move to Arsenal after admitting this season is key to his World Cup hopes with Brazil.
