Marquinhos has become the fifth most expensive defender of all time after completing his €35 million [£31.1m] switch from Roma to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 19-year-old has only made 44 senior appearances during his career and has just one season of European football under his belt, after leaving Corinthians for €3.7m last summer.

However, he had still been linked with a host of top European clubs, including Manchester United and Barcelona, before moving to the Parc des Princes this week, where he has signed a five-year contract.

The Ligue 1 champions have paid an astonishing fee to purchase the young defender, which is only beaten by deals for Rio Ferdinand, Thiago Silva, Lilian Thuram and Dani Alves in the history of football.

Marquinhos is a product of Corinthians’ youth academy and initially joined Roma on loan, but that was soon converted into a permanent deal by the Giallorossi.

The Timão are also set to benefit from the transfer as they had a sell-on clause in place that entitles them to a reported 10 per cent of any future deals, which could see them net around €3m.
