Santos have invited Robinho to make a wage sacrifice after revealing that their recent move to sign him only collapsed due to his personal demands.

The 29-year-old was close to joining his former club in January but financial restrictions made it impossible, and now another deal has failed due to Robinho’s high salary.

The transfer was abandoned on Wednesday evening, but many believe talks could be revived before the July 20 deadline or even during the January transfer window, as reported on Football Italia.

“The decision is definitive, unless something changes on the other side,” Santos president Luis Alvaro de Oliveira Ribeiro told Radio Bandeirantes.

“Milan finished up at a pretty reasonable price-tag, less than €6 million. Everyone knows what he wants to earn and we have to respect that.

“However, what Robinho wants to earn coupled with what the club would’ve paid Milan creates a figure that is implausible for any Brazilian club.”

The Brazil international told Brazilian media that he had agreed to a 35 per cent pay cut from his current Milan salary in order to push through the move, but that was still not enough.

Santos argued the cut did not include extras, such as commissions for his father and lawyer, plus the hiring of his favoured personal trainer.

The Rossoneri are still eager to sell Robinho, as he is now in the final year of his contract at San Siro.
