The refurbished Maracanã stadium will be completely ready for Sunday’s match between England and Brazil, according to officials in Rio de Janeiro.

The stadium was last scheduled to be finished by the start of this week, with local organisers previously stating that it would be ready by April 27.

However, the stadium looks far from finished from the outside, as it there is still construction work taking place around the stadium.

Leonardo Maciel, who is head of events in Rio commented: “We are still making final adjustments to the surrounding area.”

Tickets for the game have sold out which means the attendance for the game could approach the near 80,000 venue capacity.

After hosting the Brazil v England game on Sunday, the stadium will also host matches in the Confederations Cup which starts in June, before being the main venue for the 2014 World Cup where it will host the final.
