Atlético Mineiro star Ronaldinho has expressed his delight with his team’s 4-1 thrashing of São Paulo on Wednesday night which saw the Belo Horizonte side cruise into the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores.

Ronaldinho, 33, was in superb form as Atlético brushes aside their Brazilian counterparts, with goals coming from Jo and Diego Tardelli.

“It was a great result, we were able to play the way we had planned,” the former Paris St-Germain, Barcelona and Milan playmaker said after the game.

“We have a distinct way of playing when we are at home. We play within our characteristics and know that as a team we are able to get the best out of each other.”

However, Ronaldinho’s teammate Marcos Rocha was slightly more animated after the victory. The fullback hit back at critics of Atlético, saying they should think before they speak.

He told Globo Esporte: “This was the answer to those who spoke about anything but football. I’m happy for the win.

“Many people sought motivation from these invented words. We played football and showed those people who have been thrashing Atletico-MG.

“They put our football in doubt, despised what we have been doing and it was not by chance that we had the best campaign in the first phase. The answer came in the field: we move to the quarterfinals.”
