Copa Sul-Americana winners São Paulo have completed the signing of the former Inter and Juventus defender Lúcio. The official São Paulo website confirmed the defender has signed a two year contract with the club.

Lúcio, 34, only moved to the Italian champions Juventus this summer after being released by Inter, but the move turned sour and the Brazil international was released on Monday after failing to force his way into coach Antonio Conte’s plans.

“A player with this quality and profile will certainly further improve our squad to compete in the major international competitions we will have next season,” vice president of football João Paulo de Jesus Lopes told the official São Paulo website.

Lúcio, who also played for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich during his time in Europe, won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and was captain of the Seleção for five years.

“Lúcio is an old dream of São Paulo,” added director of football Adalberto Baptista.

“We came very close in July to hiring him, but it ended up not being possible. Hopefully this time everything will go well and he gets to add a lot of quality, experience and leadership to our group.”

São Paulo will officially present the defender to the press on Wednesday (19th December) at 12pm at Morumbi stadium.
