Former Cruzeiro full back Juan Pablo Sorín acted on behalf of the club to try and entice former Boca Juniors captain Juan Román Riquelme to join Cruzeiro earlier this after the playmaker announced he had finished with the Argentine giants. The deal never went through but Sorin, who enjoyed 2 spells at Cruzeiro, believes the deal could be resurrected.

He told newspaper Olé: “I can see the arrival of Riquelme in Brazil. All Cruzeiro fans ask for it, but a lot will depend on him. The club asked me to contact him and his representative, but at the time the deal did not happen. But we can resume the conversations for a second attempt.”

Riquelme announced his decision to stop playing for Boca after the defeat to Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores final in July, saying he felt he had nothing left to give the club. There had recently been rumours linking him with Independiente, but they player felt it would be too difficult to represent another club in Argentina.

Sorin believes that the 34-year-old Riquelme still has a lot to offer.

“Riquelme is highly respected and admired in Brazil. He could develop their talent in a very interesting league, with a great salary thanks to a strong economy. All Argentines who are in Brazil enjoy a good time and are much loved by fans. Román will be no exception,” he added.
