With David Luiz having been subbed before half-time, questions immediately began to arise about his availability when Chelsea play Benfica on Wednesday night.

Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea’s interim boss, sees no need to panic, but confirmed that the Brazilian will undergo checks in the coming days.

“He felt his ankle ligaments and came off,” Di Matteo explained. “We’ll have to wait for 48 hours to assess David Luiz.”

Di Matteo could not hide his delight with his team’s performance in the 4-2 away win, which keeps his side’s hopes of third or fourth place alive.

“It’s crucial for us. We can only try and win our games, and we did today.”
