The home side knew they had to win to keep the pressure on their title rivals and kn ew they could go top with a win.

It didn’t take long until they were on their way as in the third minute Eder Luis went down the right and crossed low to the near post were Elton was able to squeeze home.

Gremio came into this pitch with plenty of confidence follwoing their 1-0 home win over Sao Paulo last weekend but rarely displayed the skills and abilities they did to beat Tricolor in this match.

Despite Douglas and Escudero both having chances to draw level, Vasco would extend their lead. Diego Souza was able to recevie the ball as he went through down the left, turned inside the defender and on the edge of the box, he unleashed a shot which was too powerful for the keeper Victor.

This seemed to take the energy out of Gremio who never controlled the match and found it difficult to compete with Vasco.

It didn’t take long after the break for Vasco to extend their lead when Diego Souza was found in space on the right side of the pitch and he crossed to Eder Luis who was unmarked in the centre to easily tap home the third on the 50th minute.

The rout was sealed when ten minutes later when Fagner stole the ball off Diego Souza and his left-footed sealed all three points for Vasco to go top of the table.
