Two days after he was rushed to hospital during the Rio derby against Flamengo, Gomes has been held in the intensive care ward of Rio de Janeiro’s Hospital Pasteur.
He underwent surgery to rellieve the pressure on his brain and according to surgeon Jose Antonio Guasti, the 46-year-old remains in a coma, induced after the operation but will not require further intervention.
Gomes told reporters: “The angiotomography, a modern test that shows circulation around the brain, rules out the possibility of malformation that could have contributed to the haemorrage. That is good for his recovery, making more surgery unnecessary.”
The coach’s principal physician Fabio Miranda, meanwhile, reiterated that his patient is still in grave danger despite the recent positive news.
Miranda explained: “He was operated on 48 hours ago, and his progress is satisfactory. There is no change.
“The monitoring carried out through CTI, as well as the tests, do not show anything. This is a sign of good clinical progress. His state is still critical, but today was a good day.”
Gomes took over at Vasco in February 2011, and led the club to their first-ever Copa do Brasil title with victory over Coritiba.
