Former Atlético-GO defender Leandro Lino de Freitas, who scored the decisive goal in the 2014 Goiás title match, died at 39 from a heart attack. Known for his stoppage-time header that clinched the championship against an undefeated Goiás, Lino’s death marks the end of his significant contributions both on and off the field.

Atlético-GO released a statement mourning the loss: “With immense regret, sadness, and consternation, Atlético Clube Goianiense says goodbye to one of its greatest idols! Defender Lino, scorer of the most celebrated goal in our history and captain of the 2016 Series B title, leaves his unforgettable mark in the hearts of all Atlético fans.”

Vila Nova Futebol Clube also recognized Lino’s impact, stating, “We received with great sadness the news of former athlete Lino’s death from a massive heart attack. A former player and now an important partner as an agent, including negotiations with the current squad, his presence will be sorely missed.”

Goiás Esporte Clube expressed their condolences: “We wish strength to friends and family during this difficult time.”

After retiring in 2017, Lino worked as a sports agent. His career began at Tupi in Minas Gerais, spanning several clubs including Palmeiras and Fortaleza, before ending at Atlético-GO where he left a lasting legacy.
