The uses of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are growing day by day, from the creation of films, translations of texts to medical treatments. In that sense, the tool is also now being used to improve offensive tactics in corner kicks in soccer.

That’s what TacticAI is all about, developed by Google, which seeks to provide suggestions to teams on the best tactic when taking a corner kick. For its creation, there was input from five Liverpool experts, although it has not yet been put into practice on the playing fields.

The choice of the English team is not random. That team was the author of one of the most memorable corner kicks: in the Champions League semi-final against FC Barcelona, right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold threatened to leave the ball to a teammate, retraced his steps, and took the corner down and found Divock Origi.

It was a historic comeback for the Reds. They had lost 3-0 in Catalonia and won 4-0 at Anfield to reach the final, in which they would defeat Tottenham 2-0.

“Corner kicks have high scoring potential, but developing a routine depends on a mix of human intuition and game design to identify patterns in opposing teams and respond on the fly,” said DeepMind, a Google subsidiary dedicated to the AI.

“Despite the limited availability of reference data on corner kicks, TacticAI achieves cutting-edge results by using a geometric deep learning approach to help create more generalizable models,” he highlighted. The research on this tool was published in the specialized journal Nature Communications.
