Brazil leads with highest number of referees selected for Paris 2024 Olympics

FIFA has selected seven Brazilian referees for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the highest number from any country. This group, consisting of Ramon Abatti Abel, Edina Alves, four assistant referees, and one VAR, stands out in a global pool of 89 nominees.

Wilson Seneme, head of the CBF’s Refereeing Committee, expressed his pride and satisfaction with FIFA’s choice. “The words are pride and happiness for the work we have done,” he said, acknowledging the trust FIFA has placed in Brazilian referees. “This establishes a parameter line that Brazilian refereeing is trustworthy and encourages us to continue in this line of work and always improve.”

Daiane Muniz, appointed as VAR, shared her excitement and the significance of her selection. “I’m smiling because I’m looking for words to describe this special moment in my career, in my life. I’m very happy, I feel fulfilled,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of representing Brazil and highlighting the strong female presence among the nominees.

Edina Alves, with eight World Cup games, the most by any Brazilian referee, and Neuza Inês Back, who has officiated in three World Cups, showcase the experience and skill level of the Brazilian team. Ramon Abatti Abel adds to this seasoned lineup with his recent international refereeing credentials.

With the Olympic Games set between July 24th and August 10th, Brazil’s leading position in the international refereeing scene is clear. This selection is a testament to the country’s commitment to excellence in football officiating, marking a significant achievement for Brazilian referees on the global stage.
