Rio de Janeiro, historically, is one of the states that has won the most national titles, isn’t it? As another edition of the Brazilian Championship approaches, Sambafoot has compiled a list of the state’s clubs that have lifted the champion’s trophy of the tournament the most times. Check out the details below.

In the list, the teams considered the biggest in Rio de Janeiro, such as Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco, and Botafogo, share the number of titles. It’s worth mentioning that the state is the second most frequent winner of the competition, trailing only behind São Paulo.

Numbers by state

São Paulo is the state with the most Brazilian Championship titles in history, totaling 33, divided among Palmeiras, Santos, Corinthians, São Paulo, and Guarani. Rio de Janeiro follows closely behind with 18 victories, shared among Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco, and Botafogo.

Recent RJ Titles

The most recent titles won by a Rio de Janeiro club occurred in 2019 and 2020, both by Flamengo, under the guidance of Jorge Jesus and Rogério Ceni, respectively. Prior to that, there was a seven-year drought since Fluminense had been champions in 2012, with Fred, Conca, and company.

Rio de Janeiro Clubs with Most Brasileirão Titles

Flamengo

After a 10-year drought, the Rubro-Negro lifted the Brazilian Championship trophy again in 2019, securing it once more in the following year. In total, Flamengo has won eight titles in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1992, 2009, 2019, and 2020.

Fluminense

The Tricolor Carioca has been crowned champion of the competition four times, with great teams and club idols making history. The titles were secured in 1970, 1984, 2010, and 2012.

Vasco

The Gigante da Colina has also claimed the Brazilian Championship title four times, equaling their rival. The victories came in 1974, 1989, 1997, and lastly in 2000.

Botafogo

As for Glorioso, which is the Rio de Janeiro club with the longest title drought in the competition, they have lifted the trophy on two occasions: in 1968 and 1995, with that team that featured Túlio Maravilha.
