Vasco da Gama coach Gaucho admits that they were beaten by a superior team in Botafogo but denied accusations of being negative as the fallout from the Taça Guanabara continues.

Botafogo secured a hard-fought 1-0 win in the final thanks to a late strike from right-back Lucas.

Gaucho admitted to reporters that Vasco performed poorly and deserved nothing from the game.

“Botafogo were more compact and organised. We have a team in transition and only played together for about two months. We didn’t play well and we gave away too many passes.”

But Gaucho rejected suggestions that Vasco were negative in their initial outlook: “We couldn’t rush the game.

“We were missing too many players and the team tried to resolve this in a way that gave them more security.”

“We can’t play the same way that Botafogo does. We had to deny them space.”
