Former Manchester City Jô is released about a day after being arrested for not paying child support

On the night of last Monday (6), a curious event took place. Before the match between Ponte Preta and Amazonas, at Moisés Lucarelli, in Campinas, for the Brazilian Serie B, striker Jô was detained by the police for failing to pay child support.

The former Corinthians and Atlético-MG striker spent the night in jail, but was released on Tuesday (7).

What happened on Tuesday (7)?

  • Jô was released on Tuesday (7) from the jail attached to the 2nd Police Station in Campinas, where he spent the night;
  • He left prison around 5:20 pm (Brasilia time), after the Justice granted a release order, at the request of Jô’s defense;
  • This information was published on the GE website by journalists Gustavo Biano and Heitor Esmeriz;
  • Amazonas’ football director, Igor Oliveira, was waiting for Jô’s release to accompany him back to Manaus.

He missed the match

The experienced striker, known for his remarkable passages through Corinthians and Atlético-MG, was scheduled to be a starter for Amazonas in the match last Monday, against Ponte Preta, a game that ended with a 3-0 victory for the São Paulo team.

With Jô’s absence, coach Adilson Batista had to put William Barbio, former Vasco, as Sassá’s attacking partner.

Arrest

After being detained, Jô was taken by the police to the 10th Police Station in Campinas, near the Moisés Lucarelli Stadium, where he gave a statement. He was then transferred to the 2nd Police Station, where he remained detained overnight.

The president of Amazonas, Weslley Couto, stated that the club is providing all necessary assistance to the player and that it is awaiting guidance from the Legal Department to provide more information to both the press and the fans.

Relation with Amazonas

Jô, 37, was announced by Amazonas in January this year, after being without a club since leaving Ceará in 2022. For Amazonas, the striker played 15 matches and scored 4 goals.

Background

Revealed at Corinthians, Jô has an extensive career, passing through clubs such as CSKA, Manchester City, Everton, Galatasaray, Internacional and Atlético-MG. In addition, he had the opportunity to represent the Brazilian national team at the 2014 World Cup.
