34-year-old Brazilian striker Afonso Alves who was picked by Dunga for friendlies and 2007 Copa América, has announced his retirement from football on Monday.
Afonso Alves posted a message on social network to announce his decision, and also thanked the fans and friends who accompanied him during his career. He wrote: “Good morning, I would like to thank the Heerenveen fans for treating me so well until today. I would like to thank the club also. Today I end my career as a professional footballer and I thank my fans and friends. Thank you.”
Afonso Alves once scored 34 goals in the Dutch League, and his performances also earned him a call up to the Brazilian national team. He was transfered to Middlesbrough in 2007 for a club record fee of €20 million but couldn’t replicate his form in England, and was undervalued in the market. Alves has also played for Malmö in Sweden, and Middle East teams like  Al Sadd, Al Rayyan and Al Gharafa. He also had a brief spell at Atlético Mineiro between 2001 and 2002.
