LA Galaxy finalise a year-long loan deal for Fluminense’s Samuel

The Tricolor striker will spend next year on loan at Los Angeles Galaxy, USA. David Beckham’s former side secured the deal as part of Fluminense’s plan to increase market their brand internationally.

As it turns out, it was Samuel that ended up scoring the goal that prevented the Rio de Janeiro club from being relegated last season. A 2-1 victory over Bahia eventually proved to be decisive in maintaining Fluminense’s Série A status after it was announced that Portuguesa would be deducted points, and therefore relegated, for fielding a suspended player.

At the Galaxy, Samuel will play alongside the US national team’s number 10, Landon Donovan, as well as Irish striker, Robbie Keane. The team have been champions of the MLS in two of the last three seasons.

The Galaxy’s coach, Bruno Arena, was delighted with the deal. He described the 22-year-old as ‘talented’ and was pleased to be able to offer the young striker a chance after limited opportunities to show what he could do at Fluminense.

“We’re pleased to add Samuel to our squad. He’s a young striker with lots talent and excellent physique. We’re confident that he’ll boost our attack in 2014,” said Arena.

Samuel made 72 appearance for Fluminense, scoring a total of 15 goals, and was part of the side that won the Brasileirão and the Rio State Championship in 2012.
