Philadelphia Union’s winger Freddy Adu is close to a move to Série A side Bahia, according to reports from American press.

Freddy Adu was once deemed one of the world’s most promising players, having been labeled as the new Pelé and becoming the youngest player to ever sign a contract with a major professional American league.

The winger’s career did not progress as expected, and he played for teams in France, Portugal, Greece and Turkey before returning to MLS.

He is not in Philadelphia Union’s plans as the club want to clear up some salary cap space in order to bring another international midfielder.

The deal with Bahia is likely to involve 2002 World Cup champion Kléberson, whose wages are deemed too high. The former Manchester United midfielder has struggled to establish himself at the starting line-up.

From Bahia’s point of view, the signing of Freddy Adu would mean more marketing opportunities and a chance to internationalize the club’s brand.

The club’s president Marcelo Guimarães Filho talked to the club’s fansite ‘Galáticos Online’ to confirm the negotiations are underway, he said: “It’s not done yet, but it’s well underway. Let’s see if we finalize the deal. I hope it works out. I think it won’t take long”.
