Metalist Kharkiv crashed out of the Europa League after a 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United as a Shola Ameobi penalty proved to be enough for the Toon.

Ameobi coolly converted a spot kick in the second half and Metalist’s Brazilian contingent were unable to rescue the Ukrainians from defeat.

Left-back Fininho, midfielder Cleiton Xavier and winger Marlos all started for the Ukrainians with substitutes Jajá and Willian in reserve.

Alan Pardew’s side needed a score draw at the least to progress into the next round of the competition after a goalless draw at St James Park in the first leg.

An unventful first half saw both teams go into the half time break goalless, but the Magpies came out the better side in the second half.

Their improved performance saw them win a penalty after Moussa Sissoke was brought down by the Metalist goalkeeper, and Ameobi stepped up to convert the spot kick.

Willian, on as a substitute, found himself in a great position in the penalty area but his deft effort wasn’t enough to beat Tim Krul in goal as the Dutchman clawed the effort wide of the goal.

Krul was in action once again to deny Jonathan Cristaldo twice in quick succession as the forward found himself clean through on goal.

Willian was once again the culprit for another missed chance as he hit the post from a corner as the Ukrainians peppered Krul’s goal but his efforts were in vain as Newcastle progress to the final 16.
