Tottenham are in a race against time to complete a deal for Internacional striker Leandro Damião as the clock ticks down on transfer deadline day.

The North London club have long been admirers of the Brazilian forward and have been linked with the player since last year but had yet to make an official bid.

However, according to the Daily Mail, that all changed late on Wednesday evening when a potential move to sign Lyon striker Lisandro Lopez on loan collapsed, prompting Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to submit a £18million bid to Internacional.

The deal for the striker is complicated by the fact that 30% of his economic rights are owned by a third-party and, because of this, Spurs had been keen to wait until the summer to go for the player, but due to the collapse of the Lopez deal, they are keen to add a top class striker now to help their push for a top four finish.

The 23-year-old has been with Internacional since 2009 and is seen as the future number nine of the Brazilian national team.

He was part of their Olympic side that finished runners-up in London last summer, losing the final to Mexico 2-1, but Damião impressed during the tournament and finished as top scorer with five goals in six games.
