Daniel Alves has revealed he was the target of racial abuse in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night and believes that the war against racism in Spain is lost.
Alves, 29, said he was made feel uncomfortable by the chants aimed at him during the Classico but believes it is not just Real Madrid fans who are the problem.
“In Spain the racism war is lost. Not only at the Bernabeu,” he told Lancenet!
“When we go to other stadiums this also happens. It’s a shame. I am ten years in the country and I have been suffering this kind of attitude from my time at Sevilla.”
Alves believes that the punishments for clubs is too light and believes the only solution is to increase the financial penalties and cites England as an example on how to deal with this issue.
“Clubs must be punished. Not one or two thousand euros. It has to go further. The authorities should look at the example of England, where tough measures are taken.”
